Everyday Creative Therapy — Episode 1: Poetry, Presence and Healing

In the first episode of Everyday Creative Therapy, registered art therapist and creative writer Jenny Huang explores the therapeutic potential of poetry with pastoral leader, psychologist, poet, and narrative therapy practitioner Jonathan Browning. Drawing on Jonathan’s experience supporting people through difficult life stories, the conversation explores how healing can begin when people feel genuinely seen, heard, and able to give words to experiences that have remained buried.

《Everyday Creative Therapy

The episode centres on two poems by American poet Mary Oliver: I Happened to Be Standing and The Gardener. Through close reading and discussion, Jenny and Jonathan consider how Oliver uses nature, ordinary moments, rhetorical questions, and attentive observation to explore prayer, wonder, self-doubt, love, gratitude, and the meaning of a life well lived. The discussion highlights Oliver’s invitation to slow down, notice what is around us, and remain open to questions without necessarily needing immediate answers.

I Happened to Be Standing(〈我碰巧站在那裡〉)與 The Gardener(〈園丁〉)。

The conversation then moves from reading poetry to writing it. Jenny and Jonathan consider how poetry can help people access emotions, memories, bodily experiences, and personal stories that may be difficult to express through ordinary conversation. They discuss the way writing can transform everyday experiences into something we can observe, reflect upon, and give meaning to.

Ultimately, the episode invites listeners to experiment with poetry as a simple form of everyday creative practice. Inspired by Oliver’s rhetorical questions, listeners are encouraged to slow down, ask their own meaningful questions, pay attention to ordinary moments, and put their experiences onto paper. Rather than striving for a perfect answer or a perfect poem, the episode suggests that the act of noticing, wondering, and finding words may itself become a pathway towards greater self-awareness, connection, and healing.
