Park Art at Art Museum

Can we deliver an art lesson at the arts museum? The answer is definitely positive!

On Sunday, 20th of July, I had a fun art date with kindergarten children and their parents at the Children's Art Centre at the Taipei Museum of Fine Arts. The special children-centered exhibition, ImagePark(Figure2), was chosen as our lesson inspiration, which explored the formal elements: shapes, colors, object and human interactions, and space for play, etc.

In Figure 1, you see the improvised layout of the workstation because no art materials were allowed to be brought into the museum galleries except pencils and paper.

Before visiting the exhibition, we initiated our lesson at a large wooden bench. Children were guided to first paint the playground (the ground), build park facilities to play: monkey bars, swings, slides, seesaws, etc., and draw any other objects associated with their park experiences and memories (Figure3-5).

在參觀展覽之前,我們先在一張大型木製工作桌前展開課程。首先引導孩子們描繪遊樂場的場景(地面),接著建構公園中的遊樂設施,如攀爬架、鞦韆、溜滑梯、蹺蹺板等,並畫出其他與他們在公園中的遊玩經驗及回憶相關的事物(圖3–5)。

After making art, we entered the children's art center and started to play and interact with featured installations on display, which reinforce children's experience of park elements.

完成藝術創作後,我們走進兒童藝術中心,開始探索、遊玩並與展出的互動裝置進行互動,進一步強化孩子們對公園元素的體驗與理解。

Art and play are children's natural languages, and an art lesson incorporating the interactive exhibition greatly leveraged the efficacy of children's learning as shown in Figure10.

藝術與遊戲是兒童最自然的語言,而將互動式展覽融入藝術課程中,大幅提升了兒童的學習成效,如圖10所示。

Painting, drawing, and clay building are means for children to build their visual vocabulary, which corresponds closely with verbal vocabulary. The lesson adopted the child-centered modality, allowing children to freely express their creativity within a guided framework. That is to say, both indirective and directive approaches are deployed to encourage children's free art expression through play and multimedia art making.

Art lessons don't need to take place merely in school or classroom settings. A good exhibition relatable to children can be a perfect learning venue that inspires students' imagination and creativity beyond classroom walls.
